Geocaching is a popular hobby where people hide "caches" (containers of some sort holding at least a log book but maybe much more) and post the GPS coordinates on line. Other people look them up and then use the coordinates (with the help of a GPS receiver) to locate the cache (there are almost a million of them hidden all around the world on all seven continents), sign the log and then replace the container. I know of several people that have found well over 10,000 caches and personally I have found at least one in each of the 50 states. It can be addicting.
Since most caches are hidden outside the containers need to be watertight. Tupperware boxes, 35mm film cannisters and Altoid tins are commonly used. However, my favorite container is the ammo can. They are roomy, watertight, relatively inexpensive and can be easily purchased at an Army Surplus store.
Now, imagine how confused a geocacher might be when they read that an ammo can is hidden in a public spot only to not be able to spot a place big enough to hide a good sized box. That is the beauty of these little guys. You don't have to tell the geocacher that they are looking for a tiny version of an ammo can and they will really be surprised when they finally find it. I have placed several of these in my area and they always get a great reaction! |
Perfect sneaky hide!

| This was perfect for a geocaching hide! I looked into other micro ammo cans, and be aware that other ones offered on other sites are much cheaper versions of this. They are essentially a plastic box marked ammo. We wanted to be sneaky and say 'just an ammo can in the woods', and it would've felt weird if the cache wasn't of great quality. That's definitely not the case with this, it's metal and has a great feel for it. It even has a mini latch like regular ammo cans. It really is just a miniature version of a real ammo can. Perfect for a sneaky fun hide! |
I have no idea what they're good for, I just like 'em.

| No mystery here, they are exactly what they appear to be: detailed miniature metal reproductions of standard-issue ammo cans. Apparently made for geocaching (whatever that may be--and please don't bother to explain, I don't need any more hobbies), these are constructed entirely of metal, have working hinges, welded fittings and a foam rubber gasket covering the inner surface of the lid. The image above is accurate as to their size in relation to a U.S. twentyfive cent piece. Don't expect them to be watertight--the lid doesn't clamp tightly enough. Neither would I expect them to be a secure case for pills or small items in a pocket or purse. But, as a stocking stuffer, desk accessory or gag gift they are definitely unique and very cool little items. |
